We Refuse to Die: Building Solidarity in the Belly of the Beast
Tuesday, November 11, 2025, 10:30am ET
A lecture and discussion with Steve Lyons (Research Director of The Natural History Museum) on the urgent task of building solidarity within and between the so-called “sacrifice zones” of extractive capitalism, focusing on We Refuse to Die, a multi-year, multi-city project developed with frontline environmental justice communities across the US. This talk asks how, by developing shared symbols and collective rituals around the figure of the “living dead,” communities are pushing back against the dominant representation of “sacrifice zones” as sites of powerlessness and victimization, activating industrial fence-lines as sites of contestation and collective power-building, and metabolizing grief into collective strength and community power.
