This virtual event series brings together scholar-activists, scientists, natural historians, conservationists, water protectors and land defenders to define a natural history for our world in crisis.

Join a protest outside the Bronx Zoo, which is run by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), one of the world’s oldest conservation organizations, with a long history of complicity in human rights abuses in the name of conservation. 

This conference seeks to change the mainstream conversation around conservation by bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous activists and human rights experts from around the globe to elevate the voices of those who have seen their lands stolen and their livelihoods devastated by militarized conservation.

While the science of fortress conservation has been debunked, the ideology it was founded on persists in a vast array of responses to the climate crisis that benefit the few at the expense of the many. This panel asks what it means to unfence the future in our age of climate catastrophe.

This panel brings together community leaders and activists from key sites of contemporary environmental struggle across the country, who argue not for bigger and better fences between their homelands and extractive infrastructure, but for the end of extraction itself.
